People have a constitutional right to burn a Koran if they want to, but doing so is insensitive and an unnecessary provocation –

"much like building a mosque at Ground Zero."

Sarah Palin hits the nail on the head.

I believe that one of the big reasons people give for not burning the Koran is a fear of Muslims throughout the world responding. And these people are saying that they are not afraid of that.

We have seen, time and time again, that westerners step back when threatened by Muslims in this fashion. That we are afraid of them and their religious zeal. But the more we retreat in the face of their threats of violence, and their actual violence, the more it emboldens them.

Please note that I am not advocating the burning of the Koran, but rather pointing out that our deference to their religious preferences, while they show none to ours, is likely to harm us in the long run.

There's a slight difference between this church burning the Koran and the mosque near Ground Zero.

There are many mosques in NY and around the U.S. Building another is not unique. In addition, Muslims also died on 9/11. And while building one near Ground Zero might be insensitive, it's not a provocation.

What the pastor of this church is doing is clearly a provocation because he states that there is no path other than through Jesus, so basically all Muslims are going to hell anyway. This is more than just a Muslim thing, this has to do with a line of thought that is extreme and dangerous, even internally in the U.S.

Having said that, your point about the West backing down for fear of reprisals is correct. In the long run, it will not do us any good.

Yes, but the "line' coming from the Imam, and others, spearheading the mosque is that this mosque is being built to build a bridge and as an "outreach center"
I don't know about you, but if reaching out is their intent, why go against 70% of the people that are going to be your neighbors? I see this mosque as a clear "fuck-you" to the US and especially NYC.
The pastor of the church is also giving the finger to Muslims.
Religious zelots...........what a beautiful thing.

Perhaps Obama should invite both to the White House for beer. Obama said it worked with the cop and the racist professor.

As Winston said, solve all the world's problems, one beer at a time!
