Federal immigration officials predict that up to 200,000 Haitians could apply for Temporary Protected Status, which would keep them from being deported. Applications will be accepted starting Thursday.
So let me get this straight. We are looking at 13% unemployment, and now the Obama administration is going to let 200,000 Haitians into the US to find work. And what kind of work are they going to find? Are these Haitians doctors, engineers, skilled laborers, nurses, or accountants? What are they? And if they have some kind of skill, shouldn't they be in Haiti rebuilding the place???
UPDATE: 1-21-2010 12:45 pm
WASHINGTON (AP) -- A surprising jump in first-time claims for unemployment aid sent a painful reminder Thursday that jobs remain scarce six months into the economic recovery.
The surge in last week's claims deflated hopes among some analysts that the economy would produce a net gain in jobs in January and help fuel the recovery.

The idea to permanently import 200,000 Haitians is brilliant! Almost as brilliant as limiting how big businesses can grow so that they don't become too big to fail! But not quite as brilliant as the idea to loosen the requirements on IV (Immigrant Visa), is what is called a "Diversity" visa -- a class of immigrants known as “diversity immigrants.” Diversity Visas (DV) this allows thousands of Pakistanis, Moroccans, Algerians, etc.,to come to America this Religious Visa program is importating Jihad in the tens of thousands. I think you got bigger problems than the Haitians to worry about!

You may have a point, but I'm not well versed in immigration law, and therefore can't respond in proper fashion. I'm sure somebody will.
The fact that there may be other more serious problem doesn't diminish the idiocy of the African-Haitian (trying to be correct)policy.
When the Feds talk about temporary protected status (TPS) for 200K Haitians, they are referring to Haitians who are already in the U.S. and have no immigration status. The TPS program basically 'stays' deportation for these Haitians given conditions back in their country. It is not a permanent status. It is more of a humanitarian measure. Other people how have been protected by the TPS program have been Somalis, Sudanese, Liberians etc. Once country conditions improve, these countries are generally taken off the TPS program and their nationals here in the U.S. are deportable again (unless they are able to obtain an immigration status). I personally find it reasonable to grant TPS to Haitians already here given the circumstances. I am against bringing more Haitians here right now (unless they are children in need of immediate medical attention.)
Ray,
Can you name one terrorist who came to the U.S. under the DV or religious worker visa program? I didn't think so.
The 9/11 terrorists came here as visitors or students (F-1). Perhaps, as a knee jerk reaction to that, we should have discontinued the F-1 student visa program. I'm sure the U.S. wouldn't have missed all the students who come here, obtain professional degrees, get jobs, and pay taxes.
Update: The TPS designation applies only to those Haitians who resided in the United States on or before Jan. 12, 2010; TPS will not be granted to Haitian nationals who entered the United States after Jan. 12, 2010.
